A crown is a cap that covers the whole visible part of a tooth and takes the biting force off it. Where a filling repairs part of a tooth, a crown rebuilds and protects all of it, which is why it is the standard answer for a tooth that is cracked, heavily filled or structurally weak.
The most common reason for one is a tooth that has had root canal treatment. Once the pulp is removed the tooth is drier and more brittle, and a back tooth left uncrowned after root canal is far more likely to split. Crowns also sit on top of dental implants, and two crowns either side carry a bridge where a tooth is missing.

Which material suits a tooth depends on where it sits, how hard you bite and whether it shows when you smile. All three are made from the same impression or scan.
Strongest
The workhorse for back teeth and for anyone who grinds. Very high fracture resistance, needs less tooth reduction than metal ceramic, and modern layered zirconia looks convincing even at the front.
Most natural
The best choice where the tooth shows. It transmits light the way enamel does, so it does not read as a flat white block beside natural teeth. Strong enough for front teeth and premolars.
Traditional
Porcelain baked over a metal substructure. Durable and long established, but the metal can show as a dark line at the gum as the gum recedes over the years, which is why it is now used selectively.
Crown quotes differ by a wide margin here, and almost all of the difference is the material and the laboratory. A quote is given after the examination and x-ray, in writing, naming the material, because a crown quoted without a named material is not comparable with anything.
Zirconia and E-max cost more than metal ceramic, and both cost more than an unnamed ceramic. The material is what you are buying, so it belongs in the quote in writing.
A tooth broken to gum level needs a build-up, sometimes a post and core, and occasionally root canal treatment before a crown is possible. That work is quoted separately rather than discovered later.

The honest caveats: preparation is irreversible, so a tooth that is crowned stays crowned for life; some teeth become sensitive for a few weeks afterwards; and a small number need root canal treatment later because the nerve was already inflamed before the crown went on. That risk is assessed on the x-ray beforehand rather than after.
The margin is where crowns are won or lost. Plaque collecting at a rough or open margin causes decay under the crown and gum inflammation around it, which is why the fit is checked before cementing and at every scaling and polishing visit afterwards.
Not every damaged tooth needs one. Where enough sound tooth remains, an inlay, onlay or a bonded restoration keeps more of your own tooth. You will be told which category your tooth falls into after the examination and x-ray.
If an onlay will do the job, you will be offered the onlay. It costs the clinic a smaller case and keeps more of your tooth, and in ten years the tooth with more of itself left is the one still standing.
A crown is normally two appointments about a week to ten days apart, and you wear a temporary crown in between so the tooth is never left exposed.

Under local anaesthetic, decay and any failing filling are removed, the foundation is rebuilt if needed, and the tooth is shaped by the amount the chosen material requires.

An impression or digital scan is taken with the shade, and a temporary crown is made and cemented so you can eat and smile normally while the laboratory works.

The laboratory mills or presses the unit and layers the ceramic to the agreed shade, working to the margin recorded in the impression.

The crown is tried in, the margin and contacts are checked, the bite is adjusted until it meets evenly, and only then is it cemented.
The preparation is done under local anaesthetic and should feel like pressure and water rather than pain. Most patients describe the appointment as long rather than uncomfortable.
Well made crowns commonly last ten to fifteen years, and many last far longer. Zirconia and E-max hold their surface and shade better than older materials, but the crown is only ever as good as the tooth and the gum around it.
What ends a crown is rarely the ceramic. It is decay starting at the margin, gum recession exposing the join, or grinding that overloads it. A night guard is recommended for anyone who clenches, because a fractured zirconia crown almost always has a grinding history behind it.
Care is ordinary and it matters: clean between the teeth daily, especially at the margin, and keep a hygiene appointment every six months so the join is checked while any problem is still small.

A crown is often the last step in a sequence. Root canal treatment comes first where the nerve is involved, an inlay or onlay where enough tooth remains, and an implant where the tooth cannot be saved.
